I think it’s every parents worse nightmare to have a child say an inappropriate word; especially in public.
My son was 3 he learned one of the 7 bad words. It was a NIGHTMARE! Especially within our cross-cultural marriage.
Of course this was not to our knowledge. He only decided to share this with us one day and as the words came out of his mouth there was utter silence in the air.
I grew up in NY; where FU and Good Morning probably went hand in hand. My husband grew up in the Middle East; say this word to an Arab and you better be ready to see blood.
Our children are growing up in between.
We were so embarrassed. I wanted to rush and censor everything and everyone around him – but that’s TOTALLY unrealistic. I’m trying…
But, I’m guilty too (I’m only human). Put me under extreme stress and I might not use the best word choice at each and every waking moment.
But, how do I tell my children to do differently? Do as I say not as I do? Does that work?
I was really at a loss as to explain to my children why they shouldn’t use certain words especially when everyone else does.
For now, I guess we’ll just have to model good behavior and hope it rubs off.
Perhaps Modern Family has it right when they “suggest” that best way to handle a situation like that is to laugh about it. We didn’t laugh.
