Anyone who has children will tell you one of the delights as a parent is seeing what traits will come through as two people merge into one. We fantasize what the children will look like based on the traits we see from the parents but oh how much there is that remains to be seen.
My son, born to two parents both with dark hair is blessed with golden reddish blond baby hair making him stick out like a sore thumb in our family.
So much so, that even in casual encounters people who see him feel inclined to ask “where did he get the red hair?”
It seems as if people delight in our story as much as we do and we delight in saying the answer. “It comes from my mother’s side. My grandfather’s (he’s Irish) second cousin also had red hair so it’s in our blood. Not from this generation but it’s in our blood.
People share the humor in our story and usually also share one of their own telling us how they can relate.
It makes you think. Just who are we?
Perhaps it’s our tendency as human beings and as parents to shrug our children’s quirky-ness off onto our spouse. But it’s quite clear after you have children that there is something divine about this whole process.
Yes, it’s true. When I found out my children were to be born a certain day I quickly ran to the horoscope book to see what possible traits I would be blessed with and what challenges might lie ahead for a Leo mom.
Call me crazy – my family does; but we read together just for fun.
And as much as we found some of the traits to be true.
The real truth came watching our new born baby sit on my husband’s lap and reach his hand up to scratch his head just like his grandfather (Dad’s side) who had passed away 10 years ago.
I for one will tell you yes, I believe that there is truth in the stars. You may not want to say it’s a credible science because it can’t be proved. I would challenge your thinking and say it can’t be disproved either.
But what I also learned is blood is definitely thicker than water.
It’s true there are tendencies in us all and the majority of those tendencies are exacerbated by the example we set at home. But family is so much more than that.
Live and learn. We all do.
